Our New Life in Nicaragua

I met Alex, Dan and the children, before I visited Nicaragua in 2019. I had come across their story on Instagram and was intrigued to hear about their love of the country and desire to live there. I was so impressed with their story I made the trip to the volcanic island of Ometepe to see for myself what attracted them to Nicaragua. Below is their story written by Alex.

So this is a short story about our decision to change our path in life and work towards our vision to help and support others to improve their lives and live more in tune with nature and achieving that in ours along the way too. We are a family of four from the UK, myself, Alex, my partner, Dan and our two lovely boys Vedder,7 and Bodhi 5.

We decided to visit Nicaragua in February 2017 and the Island of Ometepe and we fell in love with the place.

We decided to go into a partnership with a local family on the island of Ometepe to help them work and develop their land to make their land work for them and their community.

We want to be involved in working within a coommunity and encouraging, as well as learning about, ways to live that have low to no negative affects on our world but also improve people´s lives. I think Nicaragua is the perfect country to start taking advantage of new, ecological answers to many 1st world country problems with modern society and we would love to be involved in a small part of that.

Our plan is to create a food forest that people can visit from afar and for our neighbours. A place where people can come, stay, relax, unwind, reconnect, work the land and gain knowledge.

We want to create an education centre, a place where there are no limits to what courses may be on offer that week or ho may be teaching them. During our time in Nicaragua, from speaking with foreign travellers from all parts of the world to trying to learn Spanish and conversing with locals, it is clear that we can all learn something from each other and how many we spoke with were so receptive to our idea and offering to volunteer their time and energy to our vision.

We want to return to Nicaragua, as soon as possible, to complete our house, plant more food trees and plants and work towards our dream to start making a difference, our goal is to return in Autumn 2020. Eco-tourism is a positive future for us all and we aim to be a part of that.
